Capital Astana city Population 14.841 mln (2001.01.01) Area 2724.9 thous. sq. km The territory of Kazakhstan spreads from the estuary of the river of Volga and eastern shore of the Caspian Sea to the mountains of Altai and Northern Tian-Shan in the east. In the south the country borders on Turkmenistan (380km), Uzbekistan (2300km) and Kyrgyzstan (980km) and in the north – on Russia (6467km). In the east Kazakhstan borders on China. The total length of the border from the west to the east is 3,000 km; from the north to the south – 1,700 km.
The Republic of Kazakhstan is relatively poor in water resources in comparison with the republics of the European and Siberian parts of the CIS, but it is wealthier than the Central Asian states. There are 8.5 thousand large and small rivers, 48000 large and small lakes in Kazakhstan. The length of 7 rivers exceeds 1000km. In the territory of Kazakhstan there is formed about 2,1% of total flow of the Aral Sea Basin that equals 2426 mln.kub.m per annum. But consumption of the water resources of the given basin in republic reaches 8235 mln.kub.m per annum (given 1999.)
In order to improve of the social-economic and environmental situation in Kazakhstan part of Priaralie (Kazalinsk and Aralsk districts of Kyzylorda) it was established Executive Board on Kazakhstan, which is located in Almaty.
