Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) is a continental country, located in the north-east of Central Asia.

Capital              Bishkek city

Population        5050 thous. (01.01.2003)

Area                  199,95 thous. km2

Kyrgyzstan borders on Kazakhstan in the north, in the south-east and east on China. In the south-west where the Tien-Shan joins the Pamirs and Alai mountains shaft, it borders on Tajikistan, and in the west on Uzbekistan.

Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country, 94% of its territory is located 1000m above the sea level, 40% of which is over 3000 m. above the sea level with large glaciers and eternal snow. 5,3% of total area is occupied by forests; 4,4% - by water; 4,2 - by glaciers, 53,5% - by cultivated lands.

Kyrgyzstan has considerable reserves of water resources. Annual average water volume of total water resources makes up 2458 km3 including 50 km3 of surface river runoff, 13 km3 of potential reserves of ground water, 1745 km3 of lake water, 650 km3 of glaciers.

In the territory of Kyrgyzstan there is formed about 24,4% of total flow of the Aral Sea Basin that equals 28454 mln.kub.m per annum. But consumption of the water resources of the given basin in republic reaches 3291 mln.kub.m per annum (given 1999.)

The climate is continental: cold winters and hot summers with big local deflections depending on the altitude. In July the average temperature in the lowlands ranges from +17 to +27 degrees C (the highest temperature can be more than +40 degrees C). At the altitude of 3000 m above the sea level the temperature can only be about +10 degrees C. In winter there are frosts in all regions.

The mountain areas of Kyrgyzstan are the basic zone of the Aral Sea Basin inflow formation. Therefore the successful solving of the Aral Sea Basin problems depends on social-economic and environment situation in the republic. In these objectives it was established Executive Board on Kyrgyzstan. (more...)
