Republic (Kyrgyzstan) is a continental country, located in the north-east
of Central Asia.
Capital Bishkek city Population 5050 thous. (01.01.2003) Area 199,95 thous. km2 Kyrgyzstan borders on Kazakhstan in the north, in the south-east and east on China. In the south-west where the Tien-Shan joins the Pamirs and Alai mountains shaft, it borders on Tajikistan, and in the west on Uzbekistan.
Kyrgyzstan has considerable reserves of water resources. Annual average water volume of total water resources makes up 2458 km3 including 50 km3 of surface river runoff, 13 km3 of potential reserves of ground water, 1745 km3 of lake water, 650 km3 of glaciers. In the territory of Kyrgyzstan there is formed about 24,4% of total flow of the Aral Sea Basin that equals 28454 mln.kub.m per annum. But consumption of the water resources of the given basin in republic reaches 3291 mln.kub.m per annum (given 1999.)
The mountain areas of Kyrgyzstan are the basic zone of the Aral Sea Basin inflow formation. Therefore the successful solving of the Aral Sea Basin problems depends on social-economic and environment situation in the republic.
