Tajikistan is a mountainous country, which is located in the south-eastern
of the Central Asia. Capital Dushanbe city Population 6127.6 thous. (2000) Area 143.1 thous. km2 The area of Tajikistan stretches WE for 700 km, and NS for 350 km. Tajikistan borders on Uzbekistan in the north and west (910km), Kyrgyzstan - in the north (630km), Afghanistan - in the south (1030km), China - in the east (430km). Tajikistan is a mountainous country. 93% of its territory is surrounded by mountains, referring to the highest mountain systems of Central Asia: Tyan-Shan and the Pamirs. Almost half of the territory of Tajikistan is situated at a height of more than 3000m.
In the territory of Tajikistan there is formed about 48.6% of total flow of the Aral Sea Basin that equals 56656 mln.kub.m per annum. But consumption of the water resources of the given basin in republic reaches 12521 mln.kub.m per annum (given 1999.)
The mountain areas of Tajikistan are the basic zone of the Aral Sea Basin inflow formation. Therefore the successful solving of the Aral Sea Basin problems depends on social-economic and environment situation in the republic. In these objectives it was established Branch in Tajikistan.
