Uzbekistan is located in the Central part of Central Asia.

Capital              Tashkent city

Population        25271 thous. (01.01.2003)

Area                  447.4 thous. km2

Uzbekistan borders on Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgiz Republic, Tadjikistan and Turkmenistan.

The most part of Uzbekistan is located in the Turan lowland the significant part of which is occupied with the Kyzyl Kum desert . In the east and the south there are foothills and spurs of Tien-Shan Mountains and Gissaro-Alai with the altitudes of more than 4,5 thousand meters. Between them there are  intermountain depressions : Fergana, Zerafshan, Chirchik-Angren. 8.2% of total area is occupied by forests; 78.7% - by deserts and steppes; 21.3 - by mountains and delves.

The precipitation such as snow and ice which were accumulated in winter in mountains with the approaching of heat begin to thaw and form numerous streams, floods ("sai"), small-sized rivers. They form the inflows of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers running to the Aral Sea. There a 10-cubic km flow of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya is formed in territory of Uzbekistan, from neighboring countries a flow of 89 cubic km  is delivered.

In the territory of Uzbekistan there is formed about 9.6% of total flow of the Aral Sea Basin that equals 11223 mln.kub.m per annum. But consumption of the water resources of the given basin in the country reaches 62833 mln.kub.m per annum (given 1999.)

Climate of Uzbekistan  is extremely continental. In a zone of deserts and steppes covering all plain area, winter is short, snow is not enough, and it thaws quickly, but summer is hot, dry and dusty. The average temperature in January is from -10î Ñ in the north up to 0î Ñ in the south, in July it is from 26î Ñ in the north up to 32î Ñ in the south. In the west and northwest Uzbekistan is not protected from anticyclone, humid air from area situated on the left bank of the Volga river and the Northern Caucasus bringing to the extremely cold snaps  in winter. In summer these air masses, moving over the deserts, are getting warmer and drier causing a lot of precipitations in the mountains of Tian-Shan and Pamir. There is a mountainous climate which depends on the height of mountains.

The big part of the Aral Sea is in the territory of Uzbekistan. In order to improve of the social-economic and environmental situation of the devastated population in the Republic of Uzbekistan it was established Nukus Branch. (more...)
