Nowadays the Aral Sea crisis is a dramatic case. The Aral Sea was an unique natural object in the nearest past. It was a salty-water sea in a volume of 1000 cubic kilometres and was 60 thousand square kilometres large. It was possessed of a high biological productivity and original world of organisms. From 1960-1990 large-scale programs on land developing were implemented in the Aral Sea Basin. The result of the implementation of these programs was twice increase of both irrigated areas and draw off discharge. Consequently, water flow into the Aral Sea decreased and in 2002 water-level lowered more than 21 metres. At the same time water-surface area was shrunk more than three times. As a result all these led to worsening of social-economic and ecological situation in the whole region.
United Nation experts mark the consequences of the Aral Sea crisis as a global ecological catastrophe of 20th century for Central Asian States a possible scale of widening of which is not known to everybody yet. Therefore, people don't realize those consequences. Detailed information about the Aral Sea crisis and chronology of the Aral Sea you can find in the book: "Aral: the history of dying sea" |
