The Executive Committee of IFAS with assistance of Executive Directorate – branch of the Executive Committee of IFAS in Republic of Kazakhstan, Executive Directorate - branch of the Executive Committee of IFAS in Kyrgyz Republic, Akimats of South-Kazakhstan and Kizil-orda oblasts of Republic of Kazakhstan conducted  Expedition “ARAL – 2004” on October 13-18, 2004.

Goal of Expedition “ARAL – 2004” is familiarization of representatives from IFAS states-founders with ecologic and socio-economic situation in the Lower Sir-Darya River and in zone of water-flow formation of Chu River, as well as determination of existing problems on water-economic, ecologic and socio-economic issues in abovementioned rayons.

 TACIS – European Union Programme rendered assistance in organization of Expedition “ARAL – 2004”.

The Expedition consisted of scientists - hydrologists, doctors, power engineering specialists, ecologists and sociologists. The members of this Expedition visited Shardarinskoye reservoir, Kokbulak hydrological station and hydro-post in downstream of Shardarinskoye reservoir, supposed place of construction of Koksarayskoe reservoir, as well as familiarize with emergency-throw construction (àâàðèéíî-ñáðîñíîå ñîîðóæåíèå) in Arnasayskoye fall. In Kizilordinskaya oblast the Expedition members got acquainted with put into operation unit of “Aytek” building on Sir-Darya River and the series of other objects, included in the programme of regulation of course of the Sir-Darya River. In the zone of formation of the water flow of Chu River the Expedition members visited Ortotokoyskoye reservoir and territory where the river takes its source. During the Expedition sample of water from Sir-Darya River was taken for definition of its chemical composition and physical features.
