PROPOSED INITIATIVES OF THE 1st ASIA-PACIFIC WATER SUMMIT

During preparative for the First Asian-Pacific Water Summit have been offered some concrete initiatives, which are in the discussion stage. It is expected that following the results of discussions they will be included in the Summit recommendations:

  1. Establishment of the Asia-Pacific Water Museum.

The Asia-Pacific Water Museum in the Thai National Water Museum to be built in 2011 in Thailand. The goals of establishment of this museum are recognizing the regional water related problems and share of knowledge regarding distinct technical and political countermeasures in the Asia-Pacific region, education those who live in the region regarding the importance of water and awareness raising of water resources problems.

  1. Creation of Water Minister Council of the Asia –Pacific region.

One of the expected roles of the Water Ministers Council of the Asia-Pacific region (WaMCAP) is to complement the Asia-Pacific Water Summit, by holding annual meetings, to which water ministers together with financial/planning ministers in the region convene to facilitate the concrete initiatives committed to at the Asia-Pacific Water Summit. The priority objectives of the Water Ministers Council of the Asia-Pacific region is improvement of the water management systems in each country by creating a coordinating body of water related ministries and solution of water problems on national agendas by involving financial/planning ministers.

  1. AWDO Development.

ADB presents a report on the «Asian Water and Development Outlook» (AWDO) which will be launched prior to the prepared 1st APWS. The final workshop to finalize the report will be held in Singapore, 23rd August, 2007. The basic reports of this document should include:

  • Making water and sanitation a higher priority in national agendas;

  • Necessity of national resource increase for addressing these problems;

  • Appeal to international and to other (private sector) donors to allocate more financing.

  1. Creation of Google Water and Sanitation Map

Google Corporation plans to create a water and sanitation map. A main objective is mapping of access to water and sanitation in the Asia-Pacific region through photo. The discussions with World Trade Organization (WTO) carry on.

  1. Creation of APWF Trust Fund

The APWF Trust Fund will be created for rendering of financial support in solution of serious water related problems in the Asia-Pacific region. The Fund is aimed at improvement of water supply and access to sanitation, and resolute reduction of vulnerability to the water related disasters by creating of water infrastructure and human development. In addition, the Fund will promote preservation and restoration of natural environment through integrated water resources management in the basin. For achievement of the above stated purposes, the Fund will finance water related researches and projects.
